Imprinting a Specific Intention Using the Power of Scent
By Gina | December 28, 2009
Have you ever inhaled a certain scent and it brought you back to your childhood or a specific event? Sometimes we judge these events as bad or good, but what we know for sure is that certain smells can help us to recall certain memories.
You can use this information to your advantage and link a certain scent to a specific intention.
It’s not by accident that I’m sending this post out right before the New Year. This is a perfect time to set new intentions and linking them with the scent of a specific essential oil blend will make your intention setting that much more powerful!
For example, let’s say you have an intention to stay calm in the midst of chaos. You intend not to get stressed out when you think of all the work you have to get done - you have a pile of papers to organize and file on your desk, bills to pay, laundry to do etc.
Here are the key steps to imprint your intention using essential oils:
- Decide whether you will make a spray or an oil blend. For a spray, add a total of 12 -15 drops of essential oils to a 1 ounce spray bottle of distilled or spring water - for an oil blend, add a total of 12-15 drops to a 1 ounce bottle with a flip cap to which you add a carrier oil such as sweet almond or jojoba. And of course, you want to use pure essential oils.
- Decide on your essential oil blend - have fun finding out which oils help you feel calm and centered. Go to your local health food store or Whole Foods Market and start sniffing some samples and buy 1-3 different essential oils that you resonate with to form your blend.
- After you make your unique Intention Blend, go to a place where you feel safe and that you love - your Sacred Space - taking your blend with you. It could be a room in your house, in your favorite chair or a spot outside in nature.
- Sit still in your favorite spot quietly for a couple minutes. Just sit and Be and Feel the calm and solitude that enters your being. Focusing on the flow of your inhale and exhale will help you still your mind.
- While you are feeling this peace and calm, with awareness, open your Intention Blend. Depending on what you chose to make, either spray it around you (closing your eyes) or put some on your pulse points and mindfully inhale the aroma while repeating your intention either silently or out loud. You can use, ‘I am calm in the midst of chaos’ or create one that resonates with you.
- Be sure to FEEL the calmness as you inhale the scent - this is how you imprint that scent and link it to the feeling in that moment.
- Carry this blend with you and whenever you feel stressed, take it out and spray it around you or massage it on you. Close your eyes and inhale its aroma, and you will recall that sacred space and calm feeling while your stress melts away.
- To make your blend even more special, name it! Grab a label, write the name on it and stick it on your bottle. You can use a word(s) from the intention you created to make that link even stronger.
Do you have any intentions you’d like to share for the coming year? One of mine is to get to really know myself - what really makes me feel vibrantly alive! How about you?

One of the specific intentions I have set for 2010 is to take at least one 3-day vacation from everything business and family related in 2010. Can I order a custom blend form you to help facilitate it?

Absolutely! I have a questionnaire for you to fill out in addition to knowing your intention for 2010. I’ll send it out to you via email right now.
Thanks dM.
